PM can solve IR debacle

When the Prime Minister was Minister for Workplace Relations and Employment, she introduced regulations that applied, from 1 January this year, the Fair Work Act to foreign vessels carrying coastal cargo under permit if more than one permit was issued in the past twelve months which is the case with most of our members. The regulations have led, in our view, to unintended consequences.

Where is the award for the Captain of the Pacific Adventurer?

A peak shipping association has expressed dismay that the Captain of the Pacific Adventurer had been committed to trial in Queensland.

'Whilst not wishing to comment on the specific charges, our members have nevertheless questioned whether he and the shipping company involved will receive a fair trial given all the media hype when the incident occurred in March, last year’ Llew Russell, CEO of Shipping Australia Ltd said today.

Shipping Australia has expressed its deepening frustration at the seeming impotence of the international community to address the continuing piracy crisis in the Indian Ocean, with around 1,500 seafarers having so far been taken hostage for ransom, often for months at a time, in spite of the comprehensive measures that ship operators have taken to defend their crew.

Recently there has been a spate of incidents with a barge having gone aground in Tasmania, a ship which hit a wharf and put the wharf out of commission in South Australia and even last weekend a barge lost its tow in Northern New South Wales with a tug being ordered from Newcastle to assist.
