Shipping Australia is delighted to welcome the Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors as our newest corporate associate member!

The Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors (AIMS) was established in 1986. Its core objectives are to:

  • research, improve and promote the specialised discipline of Marine Surveying through the delivery of processes and resources to support those involved in the industry;
  • work with government at all levels to ensure that the interests and livelihoods of those persons working within the Marine Survey industry are protected;
  • provide consumers with sufficient information and ensure that the marine survey industry itself is represented in regard to the public decision-making process;
  • provide educational resources for all people engaged in or wanting to join the profession and to improve and enhance the future of the industry.

The AIMS is the peak industry body for surveyors in our region and it is the largest marine surveyor association in the Southern Hemisphere. AIMS members are qualified and experienced in their profession and membership of the AIMS means being committed to, and demonstrating, the core values of talent, integrity and excellence in all that they do as surveyors.

The AIMS now represents more than 80% of the commercial marine surveyors in Australia and has members in all States and Territories and in most of Australia ports. It also has members in New Zealand, Asia and the South Pacific, as well as in other parts of the world.

Susan Hull, CEO of AIMS, commented:

“We are excited to be a part of the SAL team and to work with them to provide additional benefits and services to members and the shipping industry. The opportunities for working together to improve shipping standards is something that we will embrace fully. We hope to contribute positively across the many areas of common interest and particularly in the cargo sector. The team at SAL, with their shipping expertise, combined with the specialised skills of the marine survey sector bodes well for the industry at large and we welcome this alliance and look forward to a future of mutual co-operation”.

Shipping Australia CEO Melwyn Noronha commented:

“We are delighted that the AIMS has decided to join Shipping Australia. Every new member adds to the strength of our association. The AIMS and its members bring additional skills, expert insight and marine surveying experience to Shipping Australia, which will be of benefit to all of our members. And, given the commonality of our interests in resolving the seafarer crisis, promoting safety and the protection of the marine environment, it is a natural fit. We look forward to engaging with the AIMS in a mutually beneficial relationship”.

Shipping Australia is an industry association that represents Australia’s international ocean shipping industries. We have 29 full members, which includes ocean shipping lines and shipping agents. We have over 40 corporate associate members, which generally provide services to the maritime industry in Australia. These services include port and terminal operations, pilotage, insurance, and legal advice among other things. Australia imports and exports the equivalent of about 8 million twenty-foot ocean shipping containers a year.

Shipping Australia members handle the vast majority of these containers. They also handle a considerable volume of our bulk commodities and vehicle import trades. Our members employ more than 3,000 Australians.
