Qube Logistics have smashed their NSW golfing opposition and have taken home the much-coveted SAL NSW Golf Day Trophy for the second year running!
The team from Qube Logistics, featuring Nathan Pride, Russell Webb, Nathan Mills, and Damian Wilson led the pack with an impressive score of 51.25.
Taking out a respectable second place was the team from Evergreen, with a score of 56.5, and third place was won by OOCL with a score of 56.9.
The “Longest Drive 13th Hole Award” went to Brett Benson and the “Nearest the 4th Pin Hole” was won by Damian Wilson (270cm). Nathan Mills won the “Nearest the Pin 8th Hole” (600cm).
Meanwhile, the least coveted award, the “Bradman Award” was taken out by none other than the Shipping Australia Mixed Team. On news of this… spectacular… result, Shipping Australia CEO Melwyn Noronha was motivated to offer some comforting words. “On the subject of failure, the great inventor, Thomas Edison, said: ‘I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work’. I think we will have have to learn from Mr Edison!” he quipped.
The game was played under the Ambrose Rules. After each player has hit-off from the tee, the team captain decides which ball is best positioned for further play and other balls are retrieved. In an Ambrose tournament, only one team score is recorded at each hole.
A beautiful day at a gorgeous location
Held on Wednesday, 12 May, the golfers were blessed with a truly beautiful day. Light showers early in the morning, led to formations of rainbows soaring over the spectacular cliff heads at The Coast Golf Club near the entrance to Botany Bay.
Temperatures rose from a cool 13 degrees Celsius in the early morning to an altogether more pleasant 22.5 degrees throughout the main part of the day with a cooling southerly / south-westerly breeze blowing in from over the Tasman Sea, which was described by one golfer as a “majestic backdrop”. The course was in a great condition, making for some excellent putting.
Eleven teams took part, enjoying a light lunch on arrival followed by an exceptional afternoon’s golf and on-course beverages. All teams were back in the Club House in four and a half hours to finish off the day with a few drinks and an excellent meal. And the professional team at The Coast Golf Club ensured that a great day was had by all.
A joy to renew acquaintances with friends
“It is truly wonderful to see so many colleagues from the industry come together, especially after events of the last 18 months. It is especially astonishing when you remember that our last Golf Day was held in early March 2020, just over a year ago, and just before all the lockdowns started all around the world. We are truly thankful that we are able to renew relationships by gathering with friends to share a meal, a chat and a game of golf on this beautiful day,” said SAL CEO Melwyn Noronha.
“Congratulations to the Qube Logistics team, they were number one last year and have established themselves as the team to beat. Congratulations too, to the teams from Evergreen and OOCL for their excellent performances,” he said.
