The official opening of the Merchant Navy War Memorial and Columbarium with new and remedial works took place on Sunday 14 April 2024. Commemorating the 862 Australian merchant mariners who sacrificed their lives for their country in World War I and World War II, the event also marked the installation of new sandstone monuments at either side of the memorial.
The Guest of Honour who delivered the 2024 Merchant Navy Address was Her Excellency, the Honourable Margaret Beazley KC AC, the 39th Governor of New South Wales. Governor Beazley paid tribute to the merchant mariners who put their lives at risk bringing vital goods to Australia during the World Wars and during other crises. She also acknowledged the vital role that seafarers play in transporting goods to and from Australia.
Sister Mary Leahy OAM, Chaplain, of the Apostleship of the Sea (Stella Maris), led prayers, and Finola McMahon led the delegation in the singing of Hymn / Psalm 46: “God is our Strength and Refuge”.
Capt Ted van Bronswijk, a director of the Merchant Navy War Memorial Fund, read from the Gospel according to Matthew 8:23-27 “Jesus Calms the Storm”.
After Governor Beazley’s speech, Don Kennedy OAM recited the Ode of Remembrance. He then addressed the outgoing chairman of the Merchant Navy War Memorial Fund, David Field, who he acknowledged and thanked for his efforts and contribution in working tirelessly in support of the fund.
Bugler David Young of the Bankstown and Yagoona Brass played the Last Post, which was followed by the One Minute’s Silence. A Laying of the Wreaths ceremony followed, with wreaths laid by a range of industry groups including the Australian Mariners’ Welfare Society, The Nautical Institute, Shipping Australia, Sydney Bethel Union and many more.
Denise Ora, Chief Executive Officer of the Metropolitan Memorial Parks Land Manager spoke to the guests, a commemorative plaque was unveiled by Governor Beazley and the final prayer and benediction was given by the Reverend Tay Un. Closing Comments were made by Mr Field.
