A series of high profile cyber attacks has put the issue of cyber security in the spotlight.

The International Maritime Organization was recently attacked and its website had to be taken down. Containerchain has been hit, as has the Toll Group.

Australia’s Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, has revealed that Australian organisations are under sustained digital assault and our Defence Minister, Lynda Reynolds, has described the situation as the “new normal”.

Researchers Dr Zhang and Dr Shi of the Australian Maritime College recently evaluated cybersecurity across the maritime industry generally. What they found does not make for pleasant reading.

Non-I.T. specialists may be wholly surprised to learn that the root cause of a lot of cyber attacks is nothing more than extraordinarily basic failures in computer security management.
