Shipping Australia was today privileged to give a brief on the current shipping markets and port congestion crisis to the Federal Member for Wannon (Victoria) and Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Dan Tehan MP.
SAL CEO Melwyn Noronha gave the brief, discussing:
- the fact that ocean shipping has proven to be highly resilient in the supply chain crisis
- Shipping Australia members have expanded the supply of shipping
- they have placed huge orders for new ships and containers
- they have deployed extra services
- container availability – millions of full boxes are exported from Australia both pre-and post pandemic
- export shippers need to plan their transport needs in advance and give good notice to shipping companies
- ships are moving the goods from port to port… but ships can’t get into port as proven by extensive congestion
- a short update on the worldwide port congestion crisis

- the need for the landside logistics chain in Australia to work 24/7, just as has been discussed in the United States
- Industrial relations – a continuing plague on the waterfront. SAL called for waterfront related activities to be deemed as an essential service
“It was a privilege to be able to give a short overview of the many current issues. And, of course, it was a great opportunity to dis-spell the propaganda disseminated by various self-interested parties and to demonstrate that the many various issues that are afflicting the international supply chain are not caused by ocean shipping. We must all remember that the current supply chain crisis is really a port congestion crisis,” Shipping Australia CEO, Melwyn Noronha said.
