New data from internationally-respected maritime analysts, Sea-Intelligence, reveals that a staggering 11.6% of the world’s ocean shipping capacity is being lost to port delays.
January 2022 saw a record high in missing vessel capacity as 13.7% of the world fleet was “not available”. This dropped in February 2022 to 11.6%
Sea-Intelligence notes that, because the average delays are very long in some cases, only a few will be captured in the next report which means that there will have to be adjustments to the February data. The analysts envisage that the capacity absorption will likely be in the range of 11.7% to 11.8%.
There has been an easing of congestion in North America – although it is still at an elevated level. In Europe there has been no improvement and “there is no sign of imminent improvement”.
