Container shipping company Hapag Lloyd will begin mass installation of real-time tracking devices on its containers at its depots worldwide.
“The new technology will offer us the advantages of being able to create visibility, detect delays earlier, automatically inform any affected customers, and initiate the appropriate countermeasures,” the company said in a statement, adding that the move will help make supply chains more transparent and efficient.
The devices will provide GPS-based location data, measure temperatures and will monitor sudden vibrations from the container. The container fleet will be equipped with devices from the tech company Nexxiot and also from Orbcomm – a provider of Internet of Things technology.
Hapag Lloyd estimates that it will be able to track its entire dry container fleet by the end of 2023.
