Thursday 29 September 2022 is World Maritime Day.
Designated by the International Maritime Organization, the specialised UN agency focused on the safety and securing of shipping along with the marine environment, this year’s World Maritime Day is focused on new technologies for greener shipping.
IMO Secretary General, Kitack Lim, commented that the Day “provides an opportunity to promote inclusive innovation, research and development (R&D), and technology cooperation, and to showcase solutions for decarbonization and more environmentally-friendly shipping. These ambitions will benefit everyone; no one will be left behind”.
Throughout the year, the IMO will highlight green-shipping across the industry and will provide a platform for sharing knowledge and best practice.
The theme of technologies for greener shipping is linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDGs 13 and 14 on climate action and sustainable use of the oceans, seas and marine resources; SDG 9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure; and SDG 17, which highlights the importance of partnerships and implementation to achieve these goals.
