Shipping Australia meets at Port of Newcastle

Members of Shipping Australia’s NSW State Committee from across New South Wales met online and in person recently at the headquarters of the Port of Newcastle on the Hunter River to discuss industry issues.

After beginning our meeting with the Acknowledgement of Country and after reminding all present that Shipping Australia is committed to complying with Australian competition law both in the spirit and in the letter of the law, the Port of Newcastle provided an overview of its operations and took questions on its plans.

Members of the Committee – who include industry executives from a variety of different sectors, government officials, and regulators – then discussed a wide range of matters including regulatory updates, cruise shipping, trade data, industrial relations, and safety related matters among other issues.

Happily, as has been the case now for several of our meetings, there were no COVID related issues to report. It seems – touch wood, cross fingers, bring out the shamrocks and hang up the lucky horseshoes – that COVID is now a thing of the past insofar as it relates to Australian ports, shipping, and onward logistics.

At the conclusion of our meeting, Port of Newcastle generously served a buffet lunch and provided a landside port tour of the new project cargo wharf – which showcased the port’s new mobile harbour cranes, along with a visit to the site of any future deep water container terminal.
