Shipping Australia visits Port Kembla

By Shipping Australia

Shipping Australia recently conducted a goodwill tour of Port Kembla to visit members and to get updates on important local matters.

Captain Melwyn Noronha, CEO of Shipping Australia, and Mehrangiz Shahbakhsh, our Shipping Analyst & Liaison Officer, visited the Port Kembla Coal Terminal to find out more about the business development plan for the terminal, services that are available (including capacity for hull cleaning), the maintenance plan, and a range of environmental, social and governance issues. We also learned more about coal, specifically, more about metallurgical coal which typically contains more carbon, less ash, and less moisture than thermal coal.

Our intrepid duo were then hosted by the Port Kembla Gateway, hosts Brian Kiely and Juleigh Barden discussed the dimensions of the port, the infrastructure and ship loading facilities, challenges related to the incorporation of technology and automation in ship operations, maritime workforce training, and social acceptances of such changes. Shipping Australia visited the historic boardroom, which contains pictures of the port, infrastructure, ships, the international code of signals and much more.

“This illustrates a a transition from past to current moment that is amazing,” said Ms Shahbakhsh.

Capt Noronha and Ms Shahbakhsh were then generously hosted by Evan Wissell of AAT, who discussed terminal services and development plans, the changes in the supply and demand, state / federal governance, safety and emergency plans in relation to firefighting , and efficiency in the terminal.

At the end of a long day, Shipping Australia stopped by Wallenius Wilhelmsen Ocean, where they were met by Aurea Palma who provided an overview of Port Kembla services and capacity, pilotage, port movements, work to increase efficiency, terminal facilities, diversification of services, and much more.
