Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA) has announced a new education partnership with Svitzer Australia to foster and develop leadership skills among emerging women leaders in the shipping, maritime, trade & logistics sectors.
The partnership, starting this year, will see the delivery of six leadership courses for women in the sector, providing tailored skills and insights needed to succeed as leaders throughout their careers.
The day-long workshop and course is titled: Leadership Mastery for Women in Maritime .
WISTA President, Monika Lemajic, said it was an exciting partnership that would see real, tangible education and support for up to 120 women in maritime, shipping and trade, over the next three years.
“The shipping, maritime, trade and logistics sectors provide incredibly rewarding professions with significant growth opportunities, but to be successful in our sector can be tough and presents unique challenges, with women encountering particular hurdles in their journey toward leadership positions.
“To be a successful leader in our industry, and in any career, requires presence, resilience and the ability to influence groups and individuals – and we are excited at the opportunity to be build the capability of women in shipping through this training program,” Ms Lemajic said.
The course is designed to support the growth of women by enhancing their personal leadership style and skillset, inspiring them to become strong, confident leaders, and creating foundations for a future network and mentoring community.
The workshop is for team leaders, managers and emerging leaders in the sector who want to power up their confidence, influence and impact at work. WISTA members with 12 months or more of experience leading people – whether at work or in other contexts – should apply.
Women in on-shore, office and offshore or on-water roles are all encouraged to submit applications.
The course will run biannually in capital city locations across Australia, with the first to be held in Sydney on the 25th of June, coinciding with the International Day for the Seafarer.
The second leadership course will be hosted in Fremantle on the 26th of September, World Maritime Day.
Women are under-represented in key decision-making roles across almost all industries in the Australian workforce, but it is especially low in the shipping, trade and maritime sector.
Women only represent 1.2% of the global seafaring community and in Australia, women account for only 5% of CEO/COO and leadership roles in the maritime industry.
The training provider for the course is Eleanor Shakiba from Think, Learn, Succeed – an experienced provider of leadership training and supporting women in leadership with effective skills sets immediately applicable to their workplace.
“Creating an attractive and inclusive environment for women in maritime is incredibly important if we are serious about enhancing the dynamism and sustainability of our industry through a more diverse workforce,” Svitzer Australia Managing Director Videlina Georgieva said.
“That’s why this education partnership is really important for us – if we can increase the pool of female leaders in the sector, with an enhanced skillset and network to thrive, then we are creating a great foundation for the industry’s future success and talent pipeline more generally.
