It will be the 2025 International Day for Women in Maritime this weekend on Sunday 18 May 2025.
This year’s theme is “Oceans of Opportunity”.
Shipping Australia will be holding an event with WISTA next week in Melbourne to mark the day. Meanwhile, earlier this week, SAL CEO, Capt Melwyn Noronha travelled to Launceston, at the Australian Maritime College, which also held a function to celebrate the day.
The Tasmanian event was held in association with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, the Australian Maritime College, WISTA Australia, and the Nautical Institute. The day feature group discussions and a panel session hosted by Carolyn Nixon with speaker from across the maritime industry including Dr. Peggy Chen, Capt. Adam Roberts, Commander Alisha Withers and Deck Officer Caitlin Garret. The event’s Master of Ceremonies was Capt. Amanda Brew and closing remarks were given by Capt. Jeanine Drummond.
On the occasion of the International Day for Women in Maritime (2025), the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization, Arsenio Dominguez, said:
“Our theme this year recognizes the vast potential for inclusion, innovation and equality across the many different areas of work in the maritime world, from deck to boardroom, from ocean scientist to maritime administrator.”
He emphasized that “education, mentorship, policy and culture will bring down the barriers that have hindered progress.”
