Eight African countries have agreed action to support the implementation of the Hong Kong Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, which entered into force on 26 June 2025.
The Convention aims to have ships recycled safely with minimal risk to the environment or human health.
An event held in Mombasa, Kenya, at the beginning of the month introduced the region to the international standards that govern ship recycling.
According to the IMO, the participants outlined plans to:
- Perform preliminary analysis on the impact of the HKC
- Prepare advocacy and information briefs for national policy makers
- Identify and address capacity gaps that currently impede HKC ratification
Participating countries included: Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, South Africa and Tanzania.
