Anti-Modern Slavery event held in the Illawarra

An anti-modern slavery event was held in Wollongong earlier this week, at the Bluescope Steel Visitor Centre at Port Kembla earlier this week, at which Shipping Australia attended.

The event featured guest speaker Dr James Cockayne, NSW Anti-slavery Commissioner. Dr Cockayne is the first commissioner appointed to the role on a full-time basis; his 5-year term commenced on 1 August 2022.

The key message was that, when undertaking an anti-slavery risk assessment, the need is to think about the risk to people and not to the organisation or the company.

The event was facilitated by facilitated by Nicola Arvidson, Special Counsel at Colin Biggers Paisley, who provided a Federal regulatory overview and reporting in relation to the Modern Slavery Act 2018.

Also speaking was Bishop Brian Mascord of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wollongong who spoke on the Catholic perspective on slavery. Representatives of BlueScope spoke about the a responsible sourcing programme in relation to modern slavery management, governance and risk management, and due diligence and remediation.

The event took place at the Illawarra Business Forum and was hosted by the Australian Catholic Anti-Slavery Network.
