To celebrate ‘Plastic Free July’, the CMA CGM Group, a global player in sea, land, air and logistics solutions, has launched ‘Prévention de la Pollution’ in collaboration with SODEMO, a semi-public company tasked with the development and maintenance of Port Moselle, New Caledonia.
The initiative involves the installation of pollutant control netting in Port Moselle, actively capturing waste pollutants before they enter the bay. Contributing to the installation of pollutant control netting, CMA CGM protects waterways and their ecosystems in close collaboration with the local port authority in New Caledonia, in line with the Group’s commitment to protect our planet’s resources and biodiversity.
Protecting New Caledonia’s reef complex and its marine biodiversity
The installation, maintenance, and regular servicing of the Prévention de la Pollution netting acts as a mechanism to remove waste prior to significantly impacting marine ecosystems as well as serves as an opportunity to collect information and data to measure and educate on further waste mitigation
techniques. All of which are critical to enhancing public education on the environmental impacts and, how each and every one of us have a role to play in helping to protect the marine ecosystem. As the managing body for Moselle Bay Marina, SODEMO is well placed to implement new pollution control initiatives, preventing waste entering local waterways generated from within the local community.
Located in Port Moselle, New Caledonia, Moselle Bay Marina is encircled by the second largest coral reef in the world and a listed world heritage site. The Marina houses the highest number of stormwater outlets making pollution control for Moselle Bay Marina paramount in the conservation of the marine structures that surround it.
Acting for the Planet by fighting plastic pollution
Committed to Acting for the Planet by protecting the environment and preserving biodiversity through multiple initiatives worldwide, the CMA CGM Group announced its decision to no longer carry plastic waste on its ships as of June 1st, 2022. This landmark decision in the shipping industry is contributing to the protection of the oceans and biodiversity. Plastic has only been mass produced since the 1940’s, but it is having a devastating impact on marine ecosystems, as an alarming number of marine creatures eat plastic waste, causing life threatening blockages.
CMA CGM Fund for Energies
The CMA CGM Group’s Chairman and CEO Rodolphe Saadé created in September 2022 the Fund for Energies, with a USD 1.5 billion budget over 5 years to accelerate the Group’s energy transition towards its 2050 Net Zero target. In 6 months, the CMA CGM Fund for Energies has already made several investments in about thirty infrastructure projects, startups, funds and internal actions.
