The Fundamentals of the Maritime Industry aims to establish a foundation of industry knowledge.

The course content covers international trade and Australia’s involvement, how the shipping industry responds to the transport task is explained with examples of types of ships and how cargo capacity is determined. The role shipping plays in the supply chain is explained as well as the concept of logistics management. Ports are a key transfer stage in the supply chain and their role and the different cargo types handled are described.

Later in the course the commercial aspects of a liner trade shipment are explored including functions of the Bill of Lading. Learners will be introduced to key components of Shipbroking and Chartering with examples of chartering documents provided.

The Maritime Directory module details many of the government and non-government organisations that make up the maritime industry, and explains their roles and responsibilities. The industry is highly regulated and the reasons for this are explained in the Regulatory Regime and the organisations that ensure compliance are identified.
