“Introduction to Shipping” aims to build an understanding of the shipping industry by explaining the role and functions of shipping in three key areas. Each topic is comprised of a number of modules that form the knowledge areas.

Course audience
This is an open course; it will be useful for anyone working either in shipping or in an organisation that has a connection with the movement of goods or people by sea. It is an ideal compliment program for employee induction training.
Course objectives
This course has been designed to introduce you to major aspects of shipping mainly in Australia but also internationally. By successfully completing ‘Introduction to Shipping’ you will be able to:
Explain why international trade is important to countries and give examples of the benefits from trade as well as identifying those actions that generate trade and those that impede it. You will also be able to outline Australia’s position as a trading nation.
Describe how the shipping industry responds to the international trade task and outline the different sectors in which ships are employed, the different types of ships engaged and international waterways important to shipping.
Outline the advantages of moving suitable cargoes in containers and how different types of containers are available for different goods and describe methods used to ensure the availability of containers for exporters.
Identify the major bulk cargo types and the list the characteristics of the ships most suitable for carrying those cargoes and outline the related cargo handling methods.
Provide examples of the functions of a port and port authorities. As well as describe the activities you would expect to find in a port including cargo operations and locate main Australian ports and the main cargoes that flow through those ports.
Identify the major Australian government and non-government organisations that have an involvement with shipping in Australia and outline what their responsibilities are. List some of the main international organisations and summarise their responsibilities.
Trace the movement of an export consignment in a container including the formation of the contract between exporter and importer, outline how “Incoterms” might be used and list examples of documentation including the ocean “Bill of Lading” and their functions. Outline the chartering process and explain some key terms.
