Flinders holds ground-breaking ceremony on AUD$50 million precinct

By Shipping Australia

Flinders Port Holdings (FPH) has begun the construction on the new $50 million Outer Harbor Intermodal Precinct, a major investment in South Australia’s logistics capability and trade infrastructure.

Stewart Lammin, CEO, Flinders Port Holdings, said: “The Outer Harbor Intermodal Precinct is an investment in the next generation of South Australia’s trade infrastructure, designed to make the movement of containerised freight more efficient, reliable and competitive. By improving the integration of terminal, landside and rail operations within our existing footprint, we’re creating better connections for our customers while supporting South Australian businesses to move products into national and global markets. “This project reflects our long-term commitment to resilient supply chains, sustainable infrastructure and economic growth for South Australia.”

Situated adjacent to the Flinders Adelaide Container Terminal (FACT), the new precinct will bring storage, packing and rail interfaces together with the hope of supporting a more efficient containerised supply chain and the movement of trade through FPH’s South Australian facilities. These enable more than $22 billion of trade each year, equivalent to 24 per cent of the State’s Gross State Product, FPH said in a statement.

The precinct will be supported by a dedicated FACT-operated interchange, connecting the container terminal directly to the new facility while also providing port users access to South Australia’s largest empty container park for faster transfer between landside operations and vessels.

The project will be delivered in three stages, beginning with Warehouse 1, a purpose-built facility for Flinders Warehousing & Distribution to be constructed by CIP Constructions over the next 12 months. Warehouse 1 will have capacity to process 8,100 twenty-foot equivalent units per annum, provide stacking capacity for an
additional 1,000 TEU and accommodate 17,000 pallet spaces. The facility will feature a fully controlled ambient environment and a 500kW solar PV system, with excess solar generation to be used across the FPH network further supporting the group’s net-zero roadmap.

The $50m investment builds on $300m of recent investment by FPH in containerised and bulk cargo handling at Outer Harbor.
