Maersk has completed the first ship-to-ship commercial ethanol bunkering of a deep-sea container vessel, the Tangier Maersk, in the United States. Maersk currently has a strategy to explore multiple fuel pathways as the industry decarbonises.
The company argued that the operation provided insight into the operations, infrastructure, sourcing, and supply chain considerations of using methanol as a marine fuel.
“While ethanol benefits from an established production base, existing infrastructure and compatibility with alcohol-enabled vessel technology, scalable future fuel pathways will also depend on fuel availability, regulation and operational readiness across the maritime value chain,” the company said in a statement, adding that the new operation builds on previous trials aboard the Laura Maersk and the Antonia Maersk.
