Japanese shipping major, NYK, has been recognised for its participation in the “Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies” vessel speed reduction program along the west coast of North America.
Unfortunately, any vessel travelling at speed in the ocean can strike large marine animals where they congregate in or near ports and shipping channels. Vessel / whale strikes can injure or kill whales. Even smaller vessels, such as speedboats, are known for injuring and killing creatures such as manatees.
There are several ways to help reduce the risk of whale strike. One way is for vessels to slow down.
NYK is a participant in the Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies voluntary vessel speed reduction programme, and it has been repeatedly recognised for its efforts.
This year, the company achieved the Sapphire tier, the top ranking in the programme.
For approximately seven months from May 2022, the program partners analysed AIS data and evaluated NYK’s adherence to a request that ships move at 10 knots or less through designated speed reduction zones. More than 85% of NYK operating vessels maintained a speed of less than 10 knots during the monitoring programme.
NYK was awarded US$20,000 for its efforts, which it will use to address social and environmental issues under the NYK Group Sustainability Initiative.
