Shipping Australia and WISTA Australia Celebrate the 2025 IMO International Day for Women in Maritime

By Shipping Australia

Shipping Australia and WISTA Australia celebrated the 2025 IMO International Day for Women in Maritime on May 23 in Melbourne at the RACV City Club. This was the second year that such an event was organised to commemorate the day in Melbourne and the event was well attended.

The event was sponsored by HFW as the Gold Sponsor.

This year’s theme, “An Ocean of Opportunities for Women,” aligns with the World Maritime Day 2025 theme: “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity.”

The session featured three panellists:

  • Shane Walden – Managing Director at ANL
  • Kylie McDonald – Harbour Master of GeelongPort and Regional at Ports Victoria
  • Elisa Boughton – A/National Operations Manager, Regions at the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA)

The panel discussion focused on opportunities for women in the maritime industry. The panellists shared insights on how the sector has progressed while acknowledging ongoing industry challenges. They highlighted the importance of supporting inclusive policies, facilitating mentoring, and developing career opportunities for women.

Key themes discussed included the critical role of flexible work policies, mentorship programs, and leadership culture in empowering and elevating women in the industry. The panel also highlighted the importance of visibility, building strong professional networks, investment in skill development, creating career pathways, and tracking industry progress through data-driven approaches.

The panel discussion concluded with a call to action for sustained efforts to further develop a more inclusive and supportive maritime industry.

The event concluded with a message encouraging all attendees to keep the momentum going by being active mentors, advocates, and role models.

Shipping Australia and WISTA Australia representatives which formed part of the organising committee, and HFW as the Gold Sponsor were recognised for their dedication in bringing this community together.
