A 37% cut in reportable incidents at the stevedore Qube has occurred because of new simulator-based training, according to a joint statement between Qube and simulator provider Motum.
As is well known in the industry, Qube is (among other things) a provider of automotive stevedoring services.
Qube drivers must unload cars parked as close as 100 mm apart, and navigate in convoy to stacking areas.
“High levels of precision and competency are essential, as even minor damage renders a car “no longer new,” leading to costly repairs and a reduced sale price. Replacement vehicles can take months to source. However, with vessels on strict schedules, training opportunities for new drivers, as well as upskilling and testing existing operators, are required,” the joint statement reads.
Recognising these facts as the problem, Qube executives turned to virtual training and testing from Motum as a solution.
At six Qube locations around the country, trainee drivers experience an immersive environment that simulates driving tasks both on vessels and on facilities. The statement says that the system ensures a proven high level of competency before drivers ever get behind a wheel.
