British Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, has announced talks to discuss “all viable diplomatic and political measures” to restore freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, to guarantee the safety of trapped ships (approximately 1,100 ships from the international fleet are trapped inside the Persian Gulf) and to resume movement of commodities.
It was also announced that a meeting of military planners would be convened to look at how capabilities can be arranged to make the Strait safe and accessible.
“I do have to level with people on this, this will not be easy,” Sir Keir said, adding that the primary challenge will be of safety and security of passage.
“So, the fact is we need all of this together: a united front of military strength and diplomatic activity… partnership with industry, so they too can mobilise once the fighting has stopped… And above all – clear and calm leadership”.
