International liquids and gases storage and handling provider, Vopak, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Northern Territory Government to build a common-users carbon dioxide (CO2) import terminal.
The new infrastructure will be located at the Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct.
Vopak reports that the MoU sets out how the government and Vopak will co-operate to progress the development of common user carbon dioxide storage, handling and infrastructure in Darwin.
The new infrastructure will be used to manage the import, storage and distribution of CO2 and it will be used by different companies. The imported CO2 may originate from various sources, such as industrial plants that have captured the CO2 to prevent it being released to the atmosphere.
Once imported, the CO2 will be stored in large tanks until it is permanently stored or recycled for re-use.

This project contributes to the NT’s goal of a $40 billion economy by 2030 and our transition to net zero by 2050. This agreement leverages Vopak’s global expertise in developing infrastructure solutions to accelerate the energy transition worldwide,” said Eva Lawler, Chief Minister of The Northern Territory.
