International Women’s Day – a backgrounder

Designating days as weeks an “International Day of…” long predates the foundation of the United Nations in October 1945, but the body has adopted the practice as an awareness-raising and advocacy-tool.

Officially recognized by the United Nations in 1977, International Women’s Day first emerged from the activities of labour movements at the turn of the twentieth century in North America and across Europe.

In the United States In 1848, Americans Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott were angry that women were barred from speaking at an anti-slavery convention. They gathered a few hundred people at their nation’s first women’s rights convention in New York to demand civil, social, political and religious rights for women in a Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions.

According to the UN, the choice of 8 March is linked to the women’s movements during the 1917 Russian Revolution. The UN writes that women in Russia protested for “Bread and Peace” on the last Sunday in February  on the Julian calendar (which corresponds to 8 March on the Gregorian calendar). Tsar Nicholas II abdicated and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote. The “Tsar” was an Emperor-like title; the Tsars were autocrats with absolute power.
