Yesterday was the International Day of the Seafarer 2026. We posted a message on Linkedin yesterday from the Shipping Australia CEO, Capt Melwyn Noronha, and we repeat that message here today.
Capt Noronha comments:
On the occasion of the International Day of the Seafarer, I’d like to take a moment to reflect upon the people who sail our ships and who deliver our commodities and goods.
Seafaring is now, always has been, and probably always will be a remarkably difficult job owing to the physical challenges, exposure to the marine environment, the high-risk nature, and, of course, separation from family, friends and culture. IMO Secretary General, Arsenio Dominguez, commented: “On the day of the seafarer, we recognize the millions of seafarers around the world who keep global trade moving every single day. Behind everything we rely on, from food, fuel, medicine, and everyday goods, are people working at sea, often far from home and family.”
I would like to add my support for that statement. As a former professional seafarer of many years, I know well the hardships of commercial maritime life. Although I would also like to add that the seafaring life also has many compensating benefits. I enjoyed my time at sea, it gave me the opportunity to travel the world, and it provided me with good pay, economic opportunity, and life opportunities.
So to all seafarers – whenever and wherever they may be – today, our thoughts are with you. You have our thanks, and our best wishes for your future.
