Shipping Australia is delighted to welcome Port of Newcastle as our newest member!

Port of Newcastle has been operating for more than 220 years and is the largest port on Australiaโ€™s East Coast. The port handles $26 billion of trade, 4,400 ship movements and 164 million tonnes of cargo annually.

The portโ€™s direct and flow-on contribution to Australiaโ€™s gross domestic product is almost $1.5 billion and it also underpins almost 9,000 full-time equivalent jobs nationally.

With a deepwater shipping channel operating at 50% of its capacity, significant port land available and enviable access to national rail and road infrastructure, Port of Newcastle is positioned to further underpin the future prosperity of the Hunter, NSW and Australia.

Port of Newcastle Senior Manager Strategic Development, Noel Dent, said the port recognised the important role it played in building Australiaโ€™s prosperity by providing responsible, integrated and innovative supply chain solutions.

โ€œAs Australia’s deepwater global gateway, Port of Newcastle is more than a port,โ€ Mr Dent said.

โ€œWe exist to ensure Australian businesses can successfully compete in international markets โ€“ that requires a competitive and efficient pathway for imported and exported trade”.

โ€œWe know the criticality of our relationships with ocean shipping lines and shipping agents, particularly as we look to provide industry with new fit-for-purpose infrastructure and supply chain capability.โ€

Shipping Australia CEO Melwyn Noronha enthusiastically welcomed Shipping Australia’s newest member.

“Founded with a first export shipment in 1799 at a strategic location on the Australian east coast, the Port at Newcastle has a fascinating commercial maritime history. Today, the seaport is at the centre of internationally important trade.

“With access to the Port’s long-standing experience in providing services to international shipping, the expertise and input of the Port of Newcastle will further diversify our membership and enhance our ability to represent the maritime sector to government and to promote good policy.

“We are delighted to welcome the Port of Newcastle as a member”.

About Shipping Australia

We are an industry association that represents Australiaโ€™s international ocean shipping industries. We have 29 full members, which includes ocean shipping lines and shipping agents. We have over 40 corporate associate members, which generally provide services to the maritime industry in Australia. These services include port and terminal operations, pilotage, insurance, and legal advice among other services. Australia imports and exports the equivalent of about 8 million twenty-foot ocean shipping containers a year. Shipping Australia members handle the vast majority of these containers. They also handle a large volume of our bulk commodities and vehicle import trades. Our members employ more than 3,000 Australians.
